Funeral plans are not an easy topic of discussion, especially not with elderly parents. Firstly who wants to think about their parents death and secondly what parent wants to think about themselves dying? But, this week that’s what I’ve had to do, organise funeral plans for my parents. Such feelings of guilt – totally unfounded but nevertheless it’s like you’re wishing them away. I have sat with many families and shared in their laughter when they relay happy memories and sat quietly while they have cried. The one thing that all of the deceased have had in common is a funeral plan. So while families are trying to understand and come to terms with their new normal the one thing they don’t have to worry about is the actual funeral. With a funeral plan in place the funeral director and the chosen celebrant take the strain. One less thing to worry about. It’s worth having those tough conversations, as much as we don’t want to.
